Did you know that you can ask your family doctor to refer you for an assessment with a psychiatrist in the Comox Valley? You can! Referral forms are available through Comox Valley Mental Health and Substance Use located at 941C England Ave, Courtenay BC. Phone: 250.331.8524
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder left undiagnosed and untreated can be challenging enough of its own, but it becomes particularly difficult when it is accompanied by another mental health disorder; and, unfortunately, it often does. The benefits of being assessed by a psychiatrist include:
Psychiatrists are medical doctors specializing in the assessment and treatment of mental health concerns;
Psychiatrists, as medical doctors, are able to prescribe medications if they are deemed appropriate for your case and they will send their recommendations to your family doctor;
Services given by psychiatrists in Canada are covered by our health care system so you do not have to pay for your appointment(s);
Appointment times with psychiatrists - especially during the assessment phase - are longer and more detailed than appointments with general practitioners. (The same can be said if you are assessed by a Registered Psychologist; however, Registered Psychologist's fees are NOT covered by our health care system. They MAY be covered IF you have extended health care benefits through your employer or if you have purchased your own health care benefits. Registered Psychologists are not medical doctors and cannot prescribe medications.)
Should you decide to go the route of asking for a referral to an Island Health psychiatrist in the Comox Valley, you will need to fill out your information at the top of the referral form. If you and your family doctor think that it is urgent that you be seen by a psychiatrist as soon as possible, state that in the “reasons for referral/major concern” box under "client's information".
For a psychiatry referral, make sure you check off the box that is for collaborative care. Lastly, ensure that your doctor adds their name, clinic, and signature at the bottom of the page in order to be processed and triaged and fax to the number at the top of the referral form.
I hope this helps you on your journey! I find it very helpful to know what options exist.
Warmly,
Tara
